Last year I was feeling awful on every single run, stumbled upon Camille's article, and it was like a light bulb turned on. I had my ferriten checked (my doctor at the time also thought I was crazy!) and ferritan was at 14. I was so happy to have an explanation. Now it is up to the 60's but I'd like to get it a little bit higher.Kristen Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01604845216891947756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415039431326089985.post-30052222954005717382012-06-07T13:10:54.670-07:002012-06-07T13:10:54.670-07:00As someone who is just now realizing she needs to ...As someone who is just now realizing she needs to pay attention to more vitamin/nutrient information, both in my food and in my body, than just "hey, my daily Flintstone's vitamin has extra iron," this is embarrassingly over my head, but the point is that it *shouldn't* be. Looks like Potassium is excreted by the kidneys, and toxicity is mainly an issue for those with kidney issues...

I have a nutritionist, Beth Shutt, that I've worked with from time to time. I just looked up the symptoms of too much potassium and this may explain people who overdose pre-race wind up with some of the below (mild) in-race issues. (Ie, sucking NUUN day and night pre-race - it has twice the amount of potassium per tablet/serving than say, GU Brew or Gatorade!)

"Too much potassium can cause the muscles and nerves to malfunction, leading to irregular heartbeat. Other indications are stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, muscle spasms, irritability, fatigue, thready pulse and heart failure. It can also cause the skin on the hands, feet and tongue to tingle with a "pins and needles" sensation."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415039431326089985.post-44819028284008302822012-06-06T11:25:00.515-07:002012-06-06T11:25:00.515-07:00Seeing these numbers I can't believe that my f...Seeing these numbers I can't believe that my ferritin level was 8. 8! I'm jealous of your 63. Hopefully I can get myself there.

I really had to push my doctor to give me the actual ferritin number (she originally just told me it was low), and I should probably ask for all of these numbers the next time I'm in. As you've pointed out, it would be very useful to track this regularly going forward.Allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14215575637275919972noreply@blogger.com
